Release the Spyce Episode 1: Spyce Girls

I had to do it, and I’m not ashamed.

Spyce Girls.jpg

Gay Ninja Spies. I know most ninjas are technically already spies but you get the point.

I don’t have much to say about a majority of the introduction because it’s badass gay ninja spies doing badass gay ninja spy stuff.

Spyce Power.jpg

Spyce Power.

Oh right. They get a power boost by eating special spices called spyces such as Yuki’s cinnamon. My spice knowledge is poor so I don’t recognize the others.

Momo and her mom.jpg

Momo and her mom.

After completing their mission we switched over to leading lady Momo and her mom checking out the night lights when she noticed silhouettes of the ninjas from a very long distance. A certain blue haired one felt being seen. We’ll talk more about Momo in a bit.

Scolding the litterbugs.jpg

Scolding the litterbugs.

The next day on her way to school she spotted some guys throwing cigarettes on the walkway. She wanted to scold them but got cold feet. Luckily her aunt appeared and scolded them. She told auntie about her goal of making new friends on the first day. Unfortunately she was too nervous to talk to any of her classmates.

Momo and Yua.jpg

Momo and Yua.

Luckily her friend from another classroom Yua visited her to melt the ice. While Momo told her about what she saw the night before two familiar girls overheard and later befriended her.

Momo befriends Mei and Goemon.jpg

Momo befriends Mei and Goemon.

It was Mei and Goemon. Mei invited Momo later to where she worked part-time for some grub.

Momo entranced by Yuki.jpg

Momo entranced by Yuki.

On their way there they ran into Yuki and Aoba. Momo went gaga for Yuki while Goemon was like “Aoba-senpai’s super cool too, right? RIGHT!?”. Momo told them she knew about the lovely seniors from some info she dug up. Mei was like “Looking up info eh? Noice.”

They went to Mei’s workplace, which was a curry store called Wasabi where Momo met Fuu…while Mei was being chummy with her…

Jealous Fuu.jpg

As you can see. Fuu is a distant relative of Chinatsu’s.

The gang enjoying some curry.jpg

Enjoying curry.

Inside Momo was introduced to the mascots, an owl, frog and raccoon (or most likely a tanuki). She then impressed everyone by identifying the spices used in the curry by scent alone. No sooner did they finish their meals and formally introduce themselves that Momo surprised them yet again. Speaking of mascots be sure to pay attention to the amphibian.

Momo's licker sense.jpg

Momo’s “licky sense”. Fortunately Fuu wasn’t there that time.

Momo could sense people’s physical (and maybe emotional) condition with her tongue. By now viewers will have figured out that Momo has incredibly enhanced senses (Sight, hearing, taste, smell and touch).

Officer Ayumu

Officer Ayumu.

On her way home there was a robbery. Momo wanted to try and stop the thief but again got a cold shoulder. Luckily a sexy officer was nearby and apprehended the thief. She was a good friend of Momo’s dad, Officer Ayumu. She told her that there’s been a recent increase in criminal activity. Momo told her about a post-graduation paper and she considered becoming an officer like her late father (The trope will never die…) but she didn’t have the confidence. Ayumu offered to help her after work. The two parted ways as Ayumu and her partner were called to investigate another crime.

Back home as Momo gushed over briefly talking to her beloved Hanzomon-senpai she started getting a bit worried because Ayumu wasn’t back yet. She remembered something similar with her dad and…She had to go investigate.

Ayumu and her partner in trouble.jpg

This show has women of different shapes and sizes. 2018 has been a great year for me. The gang leader is hot. Heck I liked everyone but the Stunt Granny. Nice hair though.

Momo found the officers in trouble and tried to be brave by taking a picture of the (mostly) sexy gang but the leader wasn’t about to let her get away.

Aoba kicking ass.jpg

Aoba kicking ass.

Luckily our hype ninjas arrived to kick some ass. Some cute babes vs hot babes (and Stunt Granny) combat ensued.

Momo given an ultimatum.jpg

Momo given an ultimatum.

With the gang beaten down but the Stunt Granny got on an escape truck. Momo checked on Ayumu but Yuki shot her with mind wipe bullets. They were going to do the same to Momo depending on her answer. Long explanation short they’re members of the Tsukikage, a secret organization formed since the Warring States Period to protect the region from the evil crime syndicate Moryo. Although they erased the minds of Ayumu and her partner they do have contacts within the police higher ups.

As the chase went on gunshots caused the car to skid a bit and this happened…

Momo sensing Fuu.jpg

Take a wild guess what Momo sensed about Fuu.

The conversation and chase continued. Next up they told her about Mr Frog hiding in her pocket listening in since leaving Wasabi. Yuki knows…Mei said she was the one who told the others Momo would make a great addition to the team. Plus Yuki didn’t have a partner. You all know where this is going. Momo said she didn’t have any combat skills whatsoever to which Fuu said “Neither do Mei and me”.

Yuki being badass.jpg

Yuki being badass.

Yuki said something along the lines of “Your actions determine how you develop your confidence…with some extra pinch of Spyce of course”. All this while being badass because that’s what most anime girls do best. Momo was convinced to join the team to protect the city she loved…and to be closer to Yuki-senpai but she left out that part.

Moryo agents.jpg

Moryo agents. Hmmm…Yeah. She looks good too.

Interesting how most of the Fall premiere episodes I picked up had post-ED scenes. This one featured Moryo agents punishing their gay subordinates and then report that there’s a traitor among the Tsukikage. Because this is a spy show and traitors are a tradition.

Along with Vampire KinMosa this was the 2nd show of the season I had 100% confidence its premiere would be awesome. I was right.

  1. Momo is a great protagonist, I bet she’ll turn to be very badass once she gets properly trained. Her skills are unique and just by using them leads to more yuri, can’t ask for more. Well, maybe more kisses.

Ara, Momo is already having a crush on Yuki and the latter needs an apprentice slaps and rubs hands, this is goin to get……spicy in no time. Also, both Yuki and our Muscle Maid are voiced by Numakura Manami and both have a damaged right eye, hmmmmmmmmmmm X-Files theme plays.

No need to worry about Momo, Fuu since she’s already setting her eyes on Yuki and u can keep Mei all for yourself.

  3. Their main base being a curry shop and juice bar is a reference to HIMITSU SENTAI GORANGER.

So they all heard her fantasise about Yuki. Lovely ^^

Yuki should be happy to get a girlfriend who can tell exactly how she wants to be licked…

    Mei’s casual cleavage is nice.

The other recognisable spice is bay leaf. The little yellowish things could be cardamom. Cardamom pods are a more pointy, but they’re about that size and colour. And cardamom would go well with the curry theme.

Release the Spyce? More like Release the Hype.

Loved ep 1 a lot. This has gotta be one of my favorite first eps so far. After last year’s amazing Princess Principal, when I first heard about RtS I got super excited and this show totally lived up to it. Saturday is gonna be a great day this season for anime. Hell, every weekend is gonna be awesome.

Oh and now the whole play on words of the title makes sense too. I wasn’t expecting them to gain powers via eating different spices, so that was a neat aspect of the show. Interested to learn more about this in the coming eps.

  6. Liddo-kun says:

Better than what I expected, it’s like a less stressful Princess Principal. The girls are cute and the action is good. Have not memorized their names yet, but I assume the girl who licks people… her dad was killed in the line of duty? The story might turn serious heavy later, but for now… I enjoyed episode 1. Oh, and I was surprised those two tough looking guys who littered cigarettes are actually nice.. I thought grandma would be in trouble, but they listened to her.

    Looking forward to next week.

The only thing I’m certain of was the cinnamon for Yuki…for Goe-chan hmmm I think it’s Cumin it’s too small for me to recognise…for Fuu and Mei they seem to have the same one so I’m guessing it’s dried Bay Leaf. Though it’s a leaf from what I know it’s considered as a spice in the Philippines not so sure in the other countries.

Anyway, Yuki’s already feeling Momo’s presence/gaze at the beginning, I like that early connection between them πŸ˜€ And I can’t blame Momo since Yuki seems really cool actually. Fuu and Chinatsu are definitely cousins. If she was present during that lick I’m quite certain Fuu would’ve shot Momo instantly right then and there and probably think of doing the same with Goe-chan…with that memory erasing bullet of course πŸ˜›

Momo just needs some real live action experience to gain some confidence and avoid freezing up when confronting people and good thing she did. And with her superhuman like senses, she’d probably find all the missing persons in the world, stop terrorism, help cure diseases and disorders in patients that doctors have trouble diagnosing and prevent crimes somehow by just one lick/kiss to see how one person is doing emotionally and probably psychologically…she’s like the primitive version of Psycho Pass LOL :P. And having Momo as a partner in life would be mean less fights since she’ll know if her partner’s angry, sad or happy…Yuki’s lucky :D.

And a spy within a group of spies eh? I’m guessing it’s Aoba, the most normal, happy and gentle looking ones are most of the time the culprit πŸ˜›

      Could be.

She’d have definitely wiped out Momo’s memory. Goemon might have got a warning glare.

Momo will make a great partner on the battlefield and in life for Yuki that’s for sure.

Hoping it’s not one of our heroines but instead someone else. Like the Wasabi owner.

  8. I approve of the word-play in the title of the show even more now. Layers upon layers of pun.

Momo seems like a nice, extremely gay protagonist with powers that make Yuri happen even easier. This is great! Truly, great. (But what happens if she kisses someone? I hope we’ll see such with Yuki eventually…)

Yup. I can also definitely see the Chinatsu in Fuu. Now we just need the “Just as planned” face. and all will be well. (For those not in her target sights.)

All in all, a very nice first episode.

…And a spy in the spyce spies, huh…

  9. My most anticipated show of the season. Some people are saying that this is not a yuri anime but the premier seemed to be saying otherwise. It is even gayer than that lolicon maid anime. Girls licking each other in public and some of them are expies of Yuru Yuri girls. I am not a fan of one-eyed girls but Yuki is easily the best girl of the show in my opinion.

Honestly, I felt a little disturbed about these girls doing assassinations but I am more than happy to watch them killing off males to show that this series is about them and their female rivals only. Even those female mooks look cool. Namori and Takahiro sure have done themselves a good job with this. I need to rewatch this.

This one just became my show of fall number one, for now.
Momo needs to learn to speak to herself only in her head.
I hope the traitor is not one of those six girls or she just plays a double agent.

Happy that it lived up to my hype! There is so much Yuri in just episode 1. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the series has to offer. Momo’s licking was an interesting way to display her yuri-ness with a surprising effect she can use as an excuse to lick the girls more. Also, I am glad that the other girl’s reaction showed that they welcomed it. The OST was a blast to have too, especially the one played during the first battle scene (similar to the trailer). This season has to be one of the best for me so far with the amount of Yuri anime. Release The Spyce might actually top the chart for this season for me.

  12. Zack says:

This first episode did not disappoint. Everything about it was enjoyable.

Fun fact: the codenames the Tsukikage use while on duty are based on famous Japanese figures. For example: Hanzo is the name of a well-known samurai, and Goemon is a Japanese outlaw from the Warring States Period.

This is just a guess, but I’m assuming that the traitor within Tsukikage is only trying to infiltrate the bad guys in order to take them down.

The first episode good. Much better than what i expects.
I likes how Momo is, while she loves the town and its people, she also also thinks things through and has a reasonable self-doubt too, better than many others MC who just go on with the flow, and her unique ability only make me blush.
The others girl also look interesting too. Fuu is like a Koala, and Aoba, i for one will never ride the car you drive.
But most of all, to think Mei still be positive when they get lick by the one she just mets and even encourage her friend to try it. I will wait for another week with anticipation.

This is looking like less of an action series and more of a character based show, similar to Princess Principal, and Im totally on board with that. Also really glad that the show is already as gay as I expected it to be. Namori never disappoints, even when she is not writing it.

  15. ObssesedNuker says:

Okay, yes… heavy yuri subtext, if not outright text… good and all. But by god were there several points where I was like “you’ve been pointing your gun right at her for several seconds! Pull the trigger you idiots!” toward the robomooks at the beginning. Of course, if that happened we wouldn’t have a show so…

Also, this is one of those animes I find myself tempted to write a fic chucking a Chinese or Russian (or Sino-Russian) invasion into the mix, just to see how the characters react.

A quick rec you might want to take a look at, but Anima Yell! has solid yuri subtext…

A good premiere. I love the character designs, very cute and sexy.

When i saw Officer Ayumu, i was thinkin “OG’s gonna like her because we all know how much he loves his beauty marks.”

    Looking forward to more.
