Shoujo☆Kageki Revue Starlight Episode 6: Out of Her Shadow

A most intriguing episode this one was.

Young Futaba and Kaoruko.jpg

Young Futaba and Kaoruko.

We kicked off with a flashback of Kaoruko and Futaba. Kaoruko was the heir of a wealthy family and her goal was to become the greatest dancer in Japan. However, she wanted to do it at her own pace, meaning she hated following her instructors’ strict regimen. Luckily for her she had Futaba, her #1 fan who had already taken the role of “love servant”. Kaoruko made a promise to Futaba that she would become the biggest dancing sensation in Japan and blow her mind away. Futaba happily continued serving her for that reason no matter how annoying her beloved mistress’ aloofness was. As we’ve seen on the show so far that goal of Kaoruko’s hasn’t been going well. We’ll talk about the brief flash forward later.

Mahiru's consolation prize.jpg

Mahiru’s consolation prize.

It looks like Mahiru put her quest for love on hold and figured that since she most likely couldn’t win BaKaren’s love she could show her what she missed out on by proving her superiority over Hikari, which she quickly did.

Futaba and Claudine growing stronger

Futaba and Claudine growing stronger as performers.

As the show progressed we saw signs of what Futaba seemingly wanting to step out of her mistress’ shadow and aim for the Top Star as well. We also saw her forming an alliance with Claudine who was in a similar boat. Maya, ever vigilant of her precious plaything’s progress noticed her and Futaba improving during tap dancing classes. Kaoruko also noticed but didn’t make much of a fuss at first.

Kaoruko not seeing her name among the chosen

Kaoruko shocked she wasn’t chosen.

However, things started going downhill for her after the writing team Banana was a part of announced their multi-round plan on picking the cast for the Starlight play. Kaoruko thought she’d be a shoe in with her talent and especially her social status. Unfortunately the head writer didn’t think she’s worthy of joining the cast at all due to her lacking passion. Futaba tried calming her down by reminding her that Banana said there would be more than one opportunity to make the cast but her ego took a massive blow, especially when Futaba WAS chosen. She silently let her mistress whine.

Futaba after having an argument with Kaoruko.

Things got worse the next day when Futaba wasn’t part of the duo’s usual routine. Later that night she discovered Futaba had been training in secret with Claudine. I’m sure most viewers figured out Futaba’s motivation but Kaoruko was like “How dare you dump me for Claudine you traitor!”. Appalled by her arrogance Futaba moved into Claudine’s room.

Maya beating Kaoruko.jpg

Kaoruko was a jobber. Then again her losing to “This is Tendo Maya” was no surprise.

To make matters worse for the spoiled one not only was she miserable without her love servant around to care for her but we also found out she’d lost every single FCT match she’s in, meaning Mahiru also beat her that one time.

Kaoruko leaving the school

Kaoruko planning on leaving the academy. BaKaren didn’t want any of her buddies to leave

Not wanting to admit her weakness she decided the best course of action was to leave the academy and hone her craft elsewhere though it was obvious what her true intention was. Both Futaba and Kaoruko were given words of wisdom by KuroMaya. Claudine told Futaba to not see herself as a mere servant but continue improving as she had a lot of potential. Meanwhile Maya’s sexy words of wisdom went something like this: “I know how you feel. I’ve been there, consumed by my ego. However, now you must think about your servant whose loyalty is based on love AND respect. As her mistress it is your duty to show her that her devotion is warranted. Show her you deserve her love and care.” Maya had her precious plaything after all so of course she’d empathize with Kaoruko.

Futaba and Kaoruko arguing some more.jpg

Lovers’ quarrel.

At the station Kaoruko thought hard about Maya’s sexy words and hoped with all her might for Futaba to come stop her. Luckily for her Futaba deep down still believed in Kaoruko but both were too proud to admit their true feelings leading to more arguing. When a familiar message tone rung it was clear that there’s only one way to settle things.

Futaba vs Kaoruko.jpg

Futaba vs Kaoruko.

This was a historic day in the history of the FTC. For you see…the impossible happened.

Look I’ve enjoyed all the televised FCT matches so far but like Roman Reigns being in the main event of 4 Wrestlemanias in a row you start getting irked. On the bright side, unlike most of Roman’s Mania matches BaKaren’s were all great so I’ll give the writers that.

Back to Futaba vs Kaoruko. It wasn’t a wild and crazy match. Still very flashy as fans would expect. Like every other match since episode 2 it served the purpose of the girls letting out their true feelings. In Futaba’s case it was revealing the reason she wanted to be a Top Star instead of living in Kaoruko’s shadow. It was so she could be strong enough to co-star alongside Kaoruko as the leading ladies of Starlight, sharing the spotlight with her beloved mistress.

Kaoruko happy Futaba came for her.jpg

Kaoruko happy Futaba came for her.

Kaoruko tried forfeiting the match but Futaba rushed in to stop her. Kaoruko’s trick worked. She was elated her love servant cared so deeply for her. For that she couldn’t throw everything away, showing off her own resolve.

Lewd Stage Girls.jpg

Lewd stage girls.

Futaba was distracted by Kaoruko’s dazzling moves as she saw in her the mistress she admired and girl she fell in love with. Kaoruko’s losing streak had come to an end.

Like Mahiru last time Kaoruko seems to have become more focused while still retaining part of her spoiled heiress charm. Great stuff as always.

Be sure to buy a bunch of a certain fruit for the next episode. You’re gonna need it after that little post-ED scene.

A great episode and one of my new favorite episodes yet.

Alternate title for this episode: The Lover’s Spat. Great that one of my favorite ships of this series got a spotlight episode.

The FTC this episode is one of my favorites. Really liked the song!

“Another Lover’s Spat” would have been more like it as I already titled a previous episode about a lesbian couple bickering that..

The show keeps on giving us great theatrical duels.

That bus scene… when tsundere meets tsundere! Kaoruko wanted Futaba to come and stop her so bad, it was so cute xD I’ve been more of a KarenxMahiru (tragic, I know) and ThisisTendouMayaxClaudine fan, but this episode definitely put Futaba and Kaoruko on the map for me.

Didn’t expect Futaba to get so much attention, it will be interesting to see what role she plays as the show goes on.

You know you’re madly in love with someone when you want to emulate a classic rom-com trope whether your beloved is willing to play along or not.

Poor Mahiru. For now it looks like she’s coping. Still hope she’ll find another girl to love.

      KuroMaya is best couple.

KaoFuta have proven themselves this episode for sure.

      Looking forward to it.

Not much to say about this episode though, the revue match-up between Futaba and Kaoruko reminds me of my days playing Warriors Orochi (Dynasty Warriors x Samurai Warriors) on PSP.

  8. Another amazing episode! So much gay goodness, and great to finally learn what motivates both Futaba & Kaoruko to be a Star and such.

Also, I really liked seeing Kaoruko fight…Naginatas are very cool weapons, so it was nice getting such a good view of someone using one in a fight like this. Also, the fight choreography was really great!

Tbh, I like Kaoruko’s accent, and since her fighting style is the way it is, I think this episode basically put her pretty close, if not in, my top 3 for the show (Claudine is still #1 as before).

Also, I think, based on the name plates in front of the rooms, that Claudine & Maya actually reside in separate rooms? As towards the end, the name plate said Claudine, and then below it was added Futaba, without any sign of ThisisTendouMaya. And also the room seems a bit smaller than the others. Their rooms are still probably close together, probably. But you know, the two top stars getting their own rooms isn’t that out of the ordinary…probably.

And I’m glad Mahiru found at least something of a small victory for herself, even if not the grand prize.

KaoFuta had proven themselves worthy of the elite gay echelon this episode.

Great stuff and the ladies all show off the coolness of their assigned weapons.

Claudine is magical, as is her developing romance with Maya.

Ah. Got it. I corrected that part of the post.

The poor dear needs some victories no matter how small.

This was a pretty good episode.
It was interesting seeing more of Futaba and Kauroko’s relationship and how to the fight helped Kauroko change and find a reason to work hard.
The highlight of the episode thought was the after credits scene. Is Banana the one one behind all of this (or at least an accomplice?). If you think about it we have never seen her fight even though she was in the scoreboard at the end of episode 3 and she was 3rd. Next episode will be really interesting and we will probably learn more about the “tournament” itself.

  10. Lovely episode about Kaoruko and Futaba. They are like the Sakurako and Himawari of this show. Also, it is Bananice’s time to shine and she may not be as sweet as she looks….

Finally! It’s about time that Kaoruko stops her spoiled behaviour and put some effort herself instead of having Futaba do almost everything for her with no proper appreciation afterwards. But then again, having fights like this one once in a while are good in relationships. It improves ones character and usually the intimacy increases 😉 Anyway, how could Kaoruko give Maya just one candy, she even looked very excited at first…so mean 😛 And Banana…who are you and what the heck are you up to? Hmmm…
