Some Summer 2018 Anime First Impressions

The following four shows I will most likely continue watching but not cover weekly due to there not being much to discuss in them. Instead I will review when they’re finished. I will explain as we take a look at them.

Asobi Asobase Swimsuit.jpg

First of all let us take a look at Asobi Asobase. The show is about three girls forming a club where they challenge each other to strange games such as rock-paper-scissors with a painful twist or seeing how fast the girl can pierce the table with a sharp object without cutting her fingers.

The show deceives viewers with a lighthearted and charming OP but in actuality…

Asobi Asobase Facials.jpg

The “painful twist” I mentioned.

It is a slapstick comedy that features super crazy facial expressions similar to those found in Kakegurui but not as creepy. I would describe the humor as an acquired taste as not everyone digs it. I personally found it hilarious. It is my second favorite comedy premiere from the shows I picked to watch this Summer.

Oh and the ED is a better description on the kind of show AA is.

chios-school-road

Chio-chan trying to get to school.

Next up was my #1 comedy premiere in Chio’s School road/Chio-chan no Tsukaguro. It is about Chio-chan’s crazy everyday adventures as she tries to get to school on time. Both Chio-chan and the megane protagonist from Asobi Asobase have something in common. The first episode had Chio-chan staying up till 4:30 AM playing an Assassin’s Creed like game and TRY to put those “skills” to the test. It is funnier seen than described. Chio-chan also overthinks things, especially in the second half of the episode when she was surprised by the popular girl waving at her. Again, of the three comedies I picked up Chio-chan’s School Road is the one I’m most excited to watch this season. Supposedly there’s some yuri in the show. I’m interested in seeing where that goes when it pops up.

“No spoilers please”.

Jashin-chan Dropkick

Jashin-chan Dropkick.

Third is Jashin-chan Dropkick. This was the show I was the most concerned about. It gave off Dokuro-chan vibes based on the description. I mentioned several times how much I LOATHE Dokuro-chan. To my surprise I wasn’t enraged by the Jashin-chan premiere. In fact she’s a billion times more likable than Dokuro-chan. Having said that this is the show that made me laugh the least. Don’t get me wrong, some parts were hilarious but compared to Asobi and Chio-chan this one had fewer gut busting moments for me. In any case it’s a show about a Goth girl accidentally summoning an annoying demon. Said demon spends most of her time trying to kill the Goth girl, all while following the rules and playing dirty at the same time, so she can be freed from their contract. For some reason the anime started at a point where most of the leading ladies were already introduced. My best guess is the show is aimed towards an audience who have already read the manga. Dunno how newcomers will feel about this but I’m guessing some will have no problem getting into it. The show uses Warner Bros cartoon logic where they know they’re in a slapstick comedy TV show and talk to the cameraman and audience. Also Jashin-chan is like a Saturday morning cartoon villain, which is delightful.

There’s also a lesbian who based on the OP and ED has a relationship with Jashin-chan similar to that between Ika Musume and Sanae. We’ll see what happens when she’s introduced.

Again no spoilers.

Yama no Susume 3 Aoi and Hinata.jpg

Aoi and Hinata are still Super Mega OTP three seasons in.

Lastly we have Yama no Susume/Encouragement of Climb 3. For newcomers who have yet to pick up this series think of it as Yuru Camp’s calmer older sister. Because of this however, there isn’t much to talk about despite the show still being excellent. The show has six bullet points:

1: Aoi X Hinata are an oh so precious couple and they will get married in the very near future.

2: Kaede is the group’s sexy senpai who sometimes blesses viewers with her hot bod but mostly acts as the veteran guide for Aoi and the audience.

3: Kokona is a gift from the anime gods whose cuteness can melt polar ice caps.

4: Wondering when the newcomer Honoka will show up again.

5: Learning about mountain equipment.

6: Watching the girls climbing mountains.

A seventh bullet point would be their casual lives but that is to expected from Girls Club shows.

Again it is like Yuru Camp but much more subdued. Like season 2 the episodes in season are around 13 minutes long, which is REALLY good for “shorts”. Also the reason I won’t be discussing it weekly is because it would feel repetitive. Take my word for it. Yama no Susume is a great iyashikei series about mountain climbing.

For newcomers check out my review of the previous two seasons HERE. Also be sure to watch the pre-season 3 special Omoide no Present.

There you have it. I am enjoying all four shows but none of them have enough material for weekly coverage, meaning I will review them once they’re done.

As for Jashin-chan, my guess is less that it was aimed at manga viewers, and more that the way it works is in such a way that skipping forward doesn’t really miss anything important, and now we have the whole cast together already, so they can just get on with things.

I’ve not read anything to support this, but it just seems like the reasoning to me. As while I well realized this was a show that was skipping ahead, all the same I felt no real issue with that. It was something I could just jump in and feel totally comfortable with. Am glad we didn’t have to wait through all the characters joining.

hmm… I haven’t really watched Yama no Susume with the time of it being the reason, is it that good? if so, I’ll push through it, haha. I’ve also been looking at it repeatedly, just not going for it yet.

  3. Speaking of summer anime, I did find some unexpected yuri in Sunohara-Sou to Kanrinin-San. While it is obviously focused on the Ane-Shouta relationship, the student council president and vice president have a similar relationship to Katyusha from GuP, like frighteningly similar, besides the nose bleeds. Plus the third student council member is trying to get them together (as well as dress up the main character as a girl). I’m curious to see where this will end up. Nothing wrong with getting a dose of sexy older anime ladies while I am at it.

if you value your sanity, realzie that they will all be part of the MC’s harem in due time. I mean, it COULD not do that, but I’ve seen it happen….so…..many…..times……

I mean, I’m not telling you what to do. I just…am basically like someone with shellshock when it comes to “lesbians” in harem situations. I am not making light of people who have that very real condition, it’s just I don’t know of a better term to describe it.

Please do continue to inform how it goes though, maybe the creator is actually someone who isn’t following the mold.

Snap, I was hoping for a weekly coverage of Asobi Asobase since it such a weird and interesting show. Not to mention the chemistry between Kasumi and Olivia is very strong, I mean she created a club JUST for her and the blonde American.

I actually enjoyed the 1st of Jashin-chan Dropkick a lot since I’m a sadistic quid who enjoys slapstick violence and the show also gives me Gabriel Dropout plus Maid Dragon vibe, which is great since I love both of em’. And also Pekola, the new best angel.

Aoi and Hinata is just one of the cutest couples ever, they presence cleanses my soul and brings a bright smile to my face, too bad chances of seeing them as a legit couple are quite few and far between.

Also idk why but I sensed a lot of red flags about HaneBad!, no conclusive evidence yet but I have a very bad premonition regarding the show direction. But still, I’ve been blessed with Harukana Receive so no biggie (I hope).

I don’t ship any of the trio yet. We’ll see how things develop between them.

Then I’m sure you’ll be enjoying Jashin-chan quite a bit from now on.

You never know. Don’t count them out as just a ship.

Let’s hope for the best with HaneBad!.

Asobi Asobase: great voice acting from the three. The facial expressions were hilarious. I laughed a lot. I loved the ED. It might be best OPED of the season so far.

Chio-chan: also hilarious on it’s own way. I like how she’s thinking too much at everything.

Jashin-chan: it has a dark humor but I’m fine with it. Looking forward to see the lesbian you mentioned.

Yama no Susume: always love the show. It’s nice to see Aoi and Hinata again.

Yup. The voice acting and facials were the highlights of the episode. Also the OP and ED are pretty good.

Yeah. Chio-chan needed some chill pills.

Hopefully she’ll have better luck than Sanae did.

      Always nice seeing them together.

Asobi Asobase: This was amazing. I watched this kind of comedy show before but for some reason this works so much better than any other I have seen. It’s like a normal slice of life + Pop Team Epic but also consistently funny. It’s the most promising anime this season and I really hope they can keep it up in the next episodes.
Chio’s School road: I also enjoyed this one (not as much as Asobi Asobase though). It’s different type of crazy but still pretty fun. The way she crossed the gap between the two roofs was so clever. There is the possibility for some light yuri (it’s a comedy series do I don’t expect much)
Jashin-chan Dropkick: I didn’t like this one. I think this kind of needlessly violent humour is not for me. Also I really don’t like that Jashin-chan alway blames Medusa for her action. I just really don’t like the kind of character.
Yama no Susume: I have seen the first season and now I’m watching the second one. It’s pretty good. Better than Yuru Camp in the yuri ( it didn’t take THE WHOLE SEASON for the two mcs to get in a tent together)

Both are pretty good so far.

So far Jashin-chan herself isn’t as bad as Gabriel from Gabriel Dropout. She’s a jerk and it looks like she will always get hers whenever she’s up to no good.

YnS has had more than two seasons to get the girls closer together whereas YC has only had one.

  7. Got to say that I have mixed feelings for this season so far. I am very happy for Yama, Harukana, and Dropkick; I certainly despise Hanebado and Ongaku. I am looking forward to see Starlight Revue so I can fully make my first impression of this season. Here is hoping that it does not pull off an Idolmaster from its butt.

Although I don’t hate both HaneBad! and Ongaku, I can clearly understand that the All-girls-club-with-a-guy-as-their-manager is very shitty and cheap trick to pull in more of those simpletons that just crave a harem anime. While it’s technically not, it clearly paves way for one and it’s incredibly frustrating to watch an all-girls anime while constantly having doubts whether or not the yuri is going to get compromised.

Trainer-san was a wild card since the anime firmly established that he has a crush on someone else, not any the horse girls and even that did rustle some jimmy’s.

Hanebad’s problem is that the coach is probably the real MC (after reading more of the manga I’ve come to this conclusion, but it could change when i read further, still haven’t finished volume 1), but then again Hanesaki has shown all of zero interest in him, and all of every interest in the girl whose name I can’t remember. So there is that.

Ongaku the guy is 100% harmless. It would be as silly as worrying about the guy in WuG.

That has been the concern with Hanebad! since day 1. All we can do is hope for the best.

Precisely. I didn’t notice a single het-harem flag with Ongaku Shoujo’s producer. This is not Im@s OG.

    • Well I just watched Starlight Revue and, let’s just get one thing clear. MY MIND WAS BLOWN. Well, in a strange way, like I got Madoka vibes (avant-garde, Shafty) and the random turn just really was a mindfuck. In fact, my mind is in such a mess, I can’t properly describe what I just saw, but it is definitely something I really, really like. However, with such an impactful first episode, I don’t know if they can match it in the future, so I am also a little worried.

I don’t think the Goth girl “accidentally summoned and annoying demon” I think she very purposely summoned herself a girlfriend that she can do whatever she wants with her, she can have fun with the regeneration and if she truly thought Jashin was annoying she’d just let her go back. Despite the killing attempts, it looks like Yurine truly cares about Jashin, yeah that lesbian that appears in the OP and ED chasing Jashin seems to be the gag lesbian, but Yurine is the serious lesbian.

Decided to give Asobu Asobase a try. The animation is something and those fascial expressions. Still, it’s funny how Olivia can’t speak English despite being an American. Also it’s funny how she cheats as well. Won’t be covering it since I don’t have much to say about it, but will be watching that.

Well Asobi Asobase surprised me with that twist but I found it hilarious as well.

And Chio-chan my favourite 😀 I’ve been reading the manga and I’m really excited for this. Oh I hope they put in one of my favourite chapters in the show. I want to see that 😀 There are some yuri parts there but not a lot – some shippable characters I guess, for me 🙂 I bet Chio-chan can be a great soldier later on since she succeeds in TRYING the stunts she makes in games to real life.

I like Jashin-chan dropkick (but still like Chio-chan more) 😀 And yeah they already introduced the leads (Medusa fan here btw). I’m newcomer and I personally don’t mind. I just read the manga afterwards to see how the other mains came to be. Maybe they’ll have some flashbacks later.
