Uma Musume -Pretty Derby- Episode 4: No More Carrots and Oats for a While

This one should be quick.

Special Week's Diet Training.jpg

Special Week’s Diet Training.

Last episode we talked about how “weight gain” can be used effectively in idol(ish) anime. The first half of this episode was the opposite. It’s exactly what fans dislike about the trope. So yeah it’s Special Week forcing herself not to eat much to go on a diet. Didn’t take long for her teammates step in and help out.

Hopefully we’ll be blessed by seeing Team spica in two-piece bikinis soon.

Haru Urara Returns.jpg

Haru Urara Returns.

Forgot to mention the adorable jobber Haru Urara returned from a trip. I’m kinda hoping the anime surprises us by having her win a race rather than staying true to her real life counterpart and have her job till the finale.

Taiki Shuttle.jpg

Southern Belle Taiki Shuttle.

Back to the episode Trainer Guy was watching Special Week’s last race and noticed something, leading him to request a Mock Race Challenge from Grumpy Trainer Hana. It would be Special Week vs the fastest short-distance horse girl Taiki Shuttle. He hoped the experience would help get Special out of her slump. Silence Suzuka was initially against it, worried Special would lose the will to race were she to get demolished by Taiki but Special assured her she’d give it her all.

Special Week vs Taiki Shuttle.

Taiki lived up to the hype and gave Special a tough race but Special paid close attention and took as many advantages as she could to keep up with her. While it wasn’t enough to win she lost to a pro by an inch rather than a mile giving Special back her confidence.

Silence Suzuka uncertain.jpg

Silence Suzuka’s uncertainty.

Speaking of confidence let’s briefly talk about Suzuka who showed us signs of her personal struggles. She seemed to race just because and not because she enjoyed it. I imagine it had something to do with her not being a part of Grumpy Trainer’s team. Maybe some kind of deal between the trainers and her having to go back one day, leaving Special behind. We’ll see.

Gold Ship cheering on Special Week.jpg

Gold Ship is a great background character. Also the pot bellies are adorable.

Next episode looks to be the Japan Derby and Special will be going up against even more tough competition.

    Good ep.

Its official Gold Ship is my best girl this show. Even if its a one piece swim suit she’s still sexy! She makes it work!

Amazon would be my number 2. I have a weak spot for dark skined anime beauties.

The Special Suzuka (non-Gold) Ship grows stronger. I definitely like them together.

I’m still a huge fan of horse-based twists on the various things they do.

Unfortunately I’m losing track of 90% of the cast, which generally leads to me not really remembering anyone.

      They’re cute.

That IS what this show is about despite the idol stuff thrown in…because.

Happens all the time in anime with large female casts like this one.

Random idol stuff is a plus for me, just because of the goofiness of it.

I usually am disappointed by the end of anime with larger casts. Love Live! had the largest cast I could keep track of, and I think they did a better job of introducing everyone.

This show is doing great, though it’s lacking in some actual affection amongst the girls in a more romantic way, what we’re getting is good enough, as a fan of slice of life materials myself. Seeing how the trainer was trying to do his stupid antic again irked me, but I was glad that the others sent him flying, which cemented the more concrete realization that he isn’t going to be anything like P-san from the Idolmasters series. Suzuka didn’t do anything much, but since she’s a stoic character, it definitely fits her actions, and I noticed too how her bond and Special Week is developing. I supposed Suzuka has something else on the side, since there’s a few hints here and there.

Our quest for gay horsies continues. Can’t give up yet.

Oh no he’s no Producer from Im@s OG. Not that he annoyed me much when I marathoned it but I get your initial concern when Trainer Guy was all annoying in his debut.

Be patient. Suzuka will get her character developing episode in due time.

I got something that I wanted some comments from you. P. A Works, the studio that’s currently responsible for Uma Musume is gonna come up with two more titles that’s gonna air in Summer and Fall season separately.

        https://myanimelist.net/anime/37569/Tenrou__Sirius_the_Jaeger

While the first one is called Sirius the Jaeger and noticeably enough is more action oriented than anything if you saw the pv, I’m more interested in asking your view about the second anime.

        https://myanimelist.net/anime/37497/Irozuku_Sekai_no_Ashita_kara

Judging by the pv that you may see in that page, what’s the likelihood of the anime being romance centric? Of course, it’s gonna be straight for sure, as P.A Works themselves never actually do a shoujo ai or gave yuri hints. By the time comes, I may not even considered watching the anime despite how beautiful it looks, since I’m just too bored of straight romance. Well, what do you think about the pv personally?

I pick shows based on intuition most of the time. Other shows like the ones you brought up depend on feedback from reliable “agents under my employment”. Let’s put it that way.

If you’re interested in these shows give them a watch and see what you think. Currently neither one is of interest to me. Not yet at any rate.

meh, the show is not doing it for me so far.

Here’s hoping ti can pull an arc I actually care about.

I will give that the races are well done, at the least

It’s bound to happen that Special’s over eating can hold her back, At least there are some nice training, yep with Gold Ship forcing Special to dive off the highest diving board.

At least the mock race is nice and that Special almost came close to winning. Surprising that Taiki decides to hug her after the race despite Special losing. I guess it’s a good decision on Trainer’s part. Also, I agree that the way they protray Haru Urara like her real counterpart is nice.

  6. Interesting idea for a sport anime. I might check this out when it finishes airing. Right now I am not in the mood, as I had to work overtime last week due to the Grand National horse race.
