Happy Sugar Life Getting an Anime

Was this one of the Yuri manga that got a lot of votes in that anime adaptation voting thing from February? Didn’t think the world was yet ready to see this get adapted but it’s happening so…okay then.

Happy Sugar Life.jpg

Plot Summary: “High-schooler Matsuzaka Satou has a reputation for being easy, but one day her lifestyle of sleeping with one boy after another comes to an end. It happens when she meets the child Shio, for whom she is convinced she feels true love for the first time. Satou may seem sweet and innocent, but there is nothing she won’t do to protect their life together, including committing murder. But from where did she acquire the little girl, and how long can their “Happy Sugar Life” together last?”

Update: Thanks to Mai-chan‘s diligent searching there’s a high probability the anime studio that picked the show up is Genco.

Update 2: As reported HERE the anime is set for a Summer 2018 premiere.

On one hand I’m happy another yuri manga is getting an anime. On the other hand I’m wondering why it’s so difficult for simple yuri manga where the story is nothing more complicated than “two girls or women falling in love” to get an anime. Why is it so easy for stories where lesbians have to overcome a gajillion obstacles to get their happy ending or set in a situation where the chances of victory are nigh impossible?

So the challenge with this anime will be two fold:

1: Convince the mainstream that an extreme yandere lesbian (think Mirai Nikki) in love with a little girl (who also cares deeply for her) is a likable babyface.

2: Have the mainstream be cool with an age-gap yuri couple.

Speaking of…ME AND MY BIG MOUTH! Last week as of this post I wrote a tweet saying how much I wanted more age gap yuri anime because there have been several age gap het anime already. Well I got my wish…though not one I expected…so be it. I did post another tweet saying I will watch ALMOST any Yuri anime or read ALMOST any Yuri manga out there so ultimately I’m very intrigued.

What I do know is the mainstream will have a field day with this one if the criticism Citrus had been receiving from whiners and the Maidens of Michael fiasco on Steam are any indication.

Well. Get hyped…or not. It’s up to you.

Here’s another Yuri manga that I started reading and for some reason I stopped, now I’ll probably just wait for the anime adaptation. Is there any date yet?
From what I remember the manga was pretty fucked up but I enjoyed what I read northernness.

I wasn’t expecting this to get adapted into an anime. So when I can I expect anime adaptations of Bloom into You or Shinozaki-san?

In my opinion, Sato is one of the best yandere characters out there, because she’s also smart enough to know when it’s best not to kill someone. That being said, she’s still obviously crazy.

I was just writing to you on twitter about this announcement.

I loved the manga so I am very excited about the adaptation. So many creative choices to be made because the original is dissonance-based with frequent mood-swings. You can put the spotlight on the gallantry of the main couple, or their twisted circumstances and choices.

Dunno who you mean by mainstream, but between a true yandere (consistent, Yuno-type), yuri, age-gap and the criminal acts portrayed, there is plenty for people to choke on. That said, I never felt like the original tried to adopt a self-serving attitude where everything the main couple does is alright and perfect. They make difficult and sometimes antisocial choices partly because society has failed them (and continues to fail them) on multiple levels. The ensuing conflict is tragic and by no means black and white. So I expect most of the people rejecting the work outright will be those who can’t handle X being featured in a story at all, regardless of how that X is portrayed. Those open for discussion can safely watch this and say things like: “I don’t approve of that choice”, “they should have done this and that”.

By the way, HSL is the kind of story that only manga/anime can handle and keep a shade of romantic sweetness. Between who the main couple are and how harrowing their circumstances are, it would be a very difficult thing to watch it live-action without getting depressed.

From what I remember reading I do expect this to be a show where many complicated/controversial decisions will be made.

Whatever the case will be expect lots of whining on forum sites. Then again there is always whining but you know what I’m referring to.

If people are concerned and like “Sato should leave Shio alone because her selfish and dangerous behaviour isn’t true love. Release the bird and see if it comes back to you etc.” then I’ll enjoy reading that and exchanging opinions.

If people are like “eWW tHIs is siCK, why U waTCHing thiS craP U siCK tOO?” then they may jump of a cliff for all I care, I won’t be reading their opinions anyway.

    Holy !@#$%^&

I like the manga and I can’t believe that this is getting an anime. Didn’t think this one’s that popular enough. Somehow I sort of don’t see the wrongness in her yandere nature and I quite like that. Get rid of anyone trying to get in the way of their life. Confront the problems straight on while it’s still early and not wait until things get really complicated later on. Anyway, I’m looking forward to it. 🙂

Wishes do come true if you want it bad enough 😛 I suggest adding some specific details on what kind of age-gap yuri anime lol 😀

Well, I’m pretty sure I can take it!! XD!
Stories that I can’t handle are those really tragic ones, really really tragic!
I think I can accept most of it if comes to yuri.

I don’t really read anything on steam unless I search for it specifically, dunno of the fiasco going on.

I may or may not watch this anime, since I’m not all that fond with the plot nor age gap couples (unless it’s not that bad). Now we can only hope Bloom Into You to get an adaptation with that poll thingy.

  9. cirno9fan says:

i’ve been saying that I would give this another chance if it got animated (The manga was fantastic, but all the constant death flags got to be too much for me to take)
So, I am 100% ready. My gosh you guys are in for something else.

  11. Not my favorite one, but I think it’s better than nothing. I will watch it fo sure.

  12. Talking about age gap, I feel like ignoring what happened this week in Slow Start is a crime, even if the G-view is next week. It doesn’t have to be a long summary, it could be short like the Citrus one.

  13. tbiscut74 says:

Wow never thought that this would get an anime. Been keepin up with the manga so ill be definitely watchin this.

Also it would be cool if Murcielago got anime. The manga gets such sporadic english translations that ive been gettin the official english volumes so ill eventually get all of the story.

This definitely sounds like it’s not my kind of age gap series, but since it clearly labels itself as yuri, I’ll give it a try.

  18. Mai88 says:

Tbh I’d treat the source carefully. Of course I’m hyped but I also tried to look for legit sources which I did not find. From what I know is that http://ryokutya2089.com/archives/8773 is the only source stating it which looks dubious (and other sources jumping on wild conclusions just from that statement). There are a lot of questions, like how did they know it? Usually official announcement will be published at the event itself, which is Anime Japan in this case. So in my opinion, it’s better to wait for official statements from the event (it’s on the 22th March) or from official sources.
If it’s true (well, there’s a chance that it is true), that’d be hilarious. It’ll be very controverse and I hope there’ll not be much censoring.

On another occasion, I believe there’s a high chance that we’ll get a BiY anime announcement in the next Yuriten which would have originally been held from the 17th to 25th March, but I guess it’s old news that it got postponed to April/May.

We’ll find out soon enough whether the leak was true or not.

Bloom Into You getting an anime is more a matter of “when” than “if”.

As far as crazy yuri series go I want a Murcielago anime myself.

    • Cytrus says:

This is not an event leak but a furage (early delivery of magazine) announcement from the next Gangan Joker. The cover has been uploaded on the net and states we’ll be getting the anime in July. Now it is possible to fake covers and whatnot, but this looks legit enough for most sources to pick the news up, and if it is a fake we’ll know within a few short days as other people get their deliveries.

Eeeh! More hetshit at the beginning? Seriously; they had to have a girl who sleep with anything that moves as a protagonist?

I have already heard about the manga as a friend of mine has been reading this. It’s a little too creepy for me though so I skipped it (plus, the character’s backstory is too creepy and uninteresting).

Well, we already got some good yuri so I could always skip this one.

Now, what I trully would like to see is an adult life yuri anime. Just a plain story where two women go out with each others and get deeper with their relationship. Something like the manga Wife and Wife you could say but with some drama and obstacles they have to overcome and earn their happy ending… or am I dreaming too much?

  20. Shinryu says:

Very little actual interest in this series at all, but I definitely do think it’s a bit strange to see the series that keep getting picked for adaptations. While I believe that there is more than enough room for all yuri, and that pretty much anything is acceptable, there is definitely a strangely growing divide and it is giving yuri a pretty bad name amongst a more mainstream audience. It’s funny because there are so many series out there that play around with yuri elements, some of which are very good, but they all seem afraid to actually commit to being yuri and advertising themselves as such. Hina Logi is a great example of this but you wouldn’t know it was more than your typical yuri bait/tease show until the last couple of episodes. Hina Logi could have and should have been shouting from the rooftops that it was yuri, but instead the only things “brave” enough to actually call themselves yuri are the drama heavy series inclined for controversy.

  21. LuzeriP says:

Just like citrus who turned out to be fun for me to watch, I’m so curious about this one. So I’ll definitely watch it. I’m ready. We’re still don’t know what kind of animation yet?

  22. I don’t know what to think about this getting an adaptation. I personally abhor the yandere archetype, because it always ends up bringing more edgy bullshit to a series.
The only manga series I like is Love/Death by Kuzushiro, as it never felt edgy and the only reason the characters attacked each other were always regarding some petty – but adorable – lovers quarrel. If Happy Sugar Life manages to not be edgy and annoying I might end up watching it.
I agree we need more age gap yuri adaptations. Any of Itou Hachi’s works would be fantastic, even if some of the manga series aren’t very long.
I believe adapting more yuri manga like Kase-san would be a fantastic idea, as these types of manga bring out the best qualities in the genre. Or perhaps we could get a adaptation of a more mature yuri manga like Lily Love. Only time will tell.

  23. neptuniafan says:

To be honest, I don’t like anything going mainstream. Sure, the yuri manga/anime/games will get more attention and may become even more popular, but those works also have a high probability to be changed from the source material and may become something totally different, like not being a yuri work anymore just to please the mainstream audience. Staying niche is always a good thing in my mind.

    • Cytrus says:

This show can’t be done in the 5-minute format. It’s no comedy/slice-of-life – there is build-up, plot twists etc.. I would be gravely disappointed if somebody tried to force this into a 5 minute format :/.
