Hakumei to Mikochi Episode 1: Life of a Tiny Married Couple

I am thoroughly convinced this show is about the daily life of a tiny married couple and until proven otherwise I will preach this fact till the season finale. Also Yuru Camp now has competition for “Iyashikei” of the season.

The show uses lots of panel shots and I dig it. Helps emphasize expressions and what our heroines are looking at.

We joined our married couple Hakumei and Mikochi taking a heavy dresser home. Mikochi wasn’t pleased that she had to carry it.

Hakumei’s plan.

Back home as Mikochi was cooking and accidentally broke Hakumei’s mug the other was more focused on a news article about an “evening kite” bird. It’s said that an evening kite is able to grant one wish to the ones who catch it…though the main reason Hakumei wanted to tame it was shown above.

Mikochi's frequent visitor.jpg

Mikochi was often visited by a white bird.

As they began their journey up a mountain the two hitched a ride on beetles. Mikochi didn’t enjoy the ride as much, especially when Hakumei asked if they could keep one as a pet. Mikochi then reminisced of a white bird that used to frequently visit her so she kinda considered it her pet. She always fed it minestrone soup until one day it stopped coming. Hakumei amusingly asked if the white bird turned red from eating all the minestrone. #Foreshadowing.

Our heroines reached the top of the mountain and waited for the evening kite to appear. It took a while but eventually it did.

To the surprise of no one the evening kite turned out to be Mikochi’s old friend Kafu. They didn’t think they would actually see the bird so neither had a particular wish in mind. All was well and Kafu took its friends back home. Unfortunately for Hakumei forgot about her other reason to find the evening kite.

The second half of the episode had Mikochi taking Hakumei to the port town of Arabi. They visited the port town lounge to greet the barkeep. However, Mikochi lost her wallet somewhere in town. The barkeep knew Mikochi was super adorable so she lend her a helping hand.

Wanted to share this pic to show that Hakumei too is super adorable.

Mikochi was treated like the town princess.

I truly believe these two are a married couple.

The rest of the episode was full of fun and cute and it made me very very happy. Mikochi eventually found her wallet and all was well.

As readers can tell I absolutely loved this premiere and Mikochi is one of my favorite characters of the Winter season next to Harumin…and my one true love’s character hasn’t debuted yet! I can only imagine what her character will bring to the table once she does.

This was an enjoyable first episode, and Hakumei and Mikochi looked cute together.

I have a bit of a confession to make: when I first heard about this series I didn’t know much about the premise, so I when saw a promotional image for the series I was genuinely uncertain if Hakumei was a guy or a girl.

The character designs in this series look almost similar to the ones in Made in Abyss and Girls’ Last Tour. Is that art style going to be the next big thing? Not that I’m complaining.

    it was very cute
may actually be the cutest this season, and there’s quite a bit of competition.
I think the only thing we’re getting out of this is pure yuri, I couldn’t imagine characters this cute doing anything remotely lewd; well… I probably could, but that’s that and this is this.

Can we get a little one running around in this series? I’ve been wanting some family yuri, and adding a little one to the mix would be perfect.

    More please.

  5. [manga spoilers]

The author doesn’t seem to like the married couple interpretation. In the manga, when a character mistakes the two of them for one, Hakumei just says “I’m a woman.” Not “she’s not my wife” or “we’re not like that”, but just “I’m a woman.” I get that the joke was that Hakumei was mistaken for a guy, but this implies that the world that Hakumei and Mikochi inhabit is just as shitty as ours in this respect (i.e. women can’t marry), and that the author is just fine with the way things are in the real world. This of course shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying this work or interpreting the subtext any way they want, but for me the author’s blatant apathy sours the experience.

  6. It’s a very comfortable show otherwise, and there’s a lot to like about it. Master is my favorite for now (Megumi Ogata is GOAT)

Simple and enjoyable. Reminds me of Tamako Market – kind storeowners giving them free foods. Will keep following for now. ^^

That’s exactly the same title I thought for this episode, every second of this show I watched it with a silly grin on my face because they exponentially acted more and more like a married couple.

Also, remember that old Izetta video I made? I uploaded a new interesting video to my channel, check it out.
