New Game!! (Double Plus) Episode 2: Competition Pressure

The premiere was red hot with lots of fun and uber gayness. It only felt right to remind viewers that it’s not all fun and games in the next episode.

Yun still having doubts.

Before we get to the serious stuff let’s cover the fun stuff first.

Which of the three is your fav Aoba?

Mad Max parody.jpg

Hajime spent all night marathoning a Mad Max parody. Time well spent.

I’m shocked Hajime didn’t win the competition after the purple angel’s incredible support.

Hajime unable to handle the pressure.jpg

Hajime couldn’t handle the pressure of people mistaking her sleepiness for working hard all night rather than slacking off.

Aoba playing again.jpg

Aoba, murderer of cute toys.

There were a few other things but that’s the gist of the fun stuff. Now to get all serious.

As the episode’s subtitle indicates everyone was under pressure preparing for the competition to decide who would be the Lead Character Designer of the upcoming project. The theme was characters fusing with animals or monsters to become stronger. As the first pic above shows, Yun, following up from the premiere still had doubts as to what it was she wanted to accomplish working at Eagle Jump. She said the competition was a waste of time because Ko was the clear favorite to be chosen. Aoba responded by saying that “Win or lose, it’s better to have tried than doing nothing at all”.

The first round of the competition had Hazuki, Rin and another megane lady judge contestants and give them tips to improve before making the final decision in the second round. The shocker came when Ko, the odds on favorite, had ALL her designs rejected because they were too similar to the ones in Fairies Story 3.

Return of the 🐻 jammies.

When it was Aoba’s turn it seemed like she too would fail but then one drawing in particular grabbed the judges’ attention. They saw great potential in it and told her that with some adjustments it could work.

Aoba was happy her bear jammies design got positive feedback but also noticed Ko’s frustration…who lashed out at poor Aoba when asking for her advice. Later Yun admitted she thought Hajime and Aoba were foolish for trying to win the competition when in the end it was Yun who was the foolish one for not having tried at all. While Aoba understood Yun’s self-doubt and there was no harm done she herself was hurting because of Ko’s pain. Her dream is to become a great character designer like Ko but never in a million years would she want to crush her dreams to get to the top.

Rin helping Ko.jpg

Rin helping ease Ko’s mind.

It was once again up to Ko’s wifey to help her find the answer. Ko knew that unfairly lashing out at Aoba was worse than having her designs rejected. The two remembered that when Ko first started she was in the exact same position as Aoba. She also got a good lashing from her previous senpai for a very similar reason. Knowing this, Rin told Ko that she knew what to do to apologize to Aoba.

The new design.

Ko gave Aoba some advice and she was happy to see the artistic spark in Ko’s eyes again that she so admired. In the end the judges named both Aoba and Ko as co-designers with Ko having the final say. Good for both ladies.

Hopefully we’ll see more from her and the other newcomers as the show progresses.

My mistake. At first I would have tried to milk the wrong end!

  3. Good stuff, as usual. I’m glad we’re getting a more serious side of the show which probably better reflects the reality of the industry. However, it still keeps it’s cuteness as a good balance. I’m glad that Ko and Aoba were able to overcome that hiccup and work together. I think them being Co-designers will be good for them both, because it’ll allow Aoba to improve her skill by being mentored by Ko and Ko to grow in her themes with Aoba’s fresh ideas. I’m rooting for Yun and Hajime to at least get some recognition for their efforts. As for my favorite Aoba, I think I’m torn between the Inu and Neko Aoba’s.

A nice balance between fun and serious is much appreciated.

Veteran teaming up with an aspiring artist is a good thing. Best of luck to both.

I’m sure Yun and Hajime’s work won’t go unnoticed.

Tough to choose between the three.

They all have their charms, but for me cat Aoba is number one.
This episode was great; it’s nice to see that the show can have a more serious side. I’m just glad Aoba was able to get her smile back in the end. Happy Aoba is best Aoba. Well, maybe second to cat Aoba…

Can I choose all of them? Aoba looks great in everything.

Great episode. We get to see the serious part. Although Ko’s getting angry kind of scary. I’m glad that solved fast. I want some support and candy from Hifumi.

if you look at Aoba’s designs for a moment…it is the game MC literally ripping apart a sentient teddy to wear its skin as a suit! Only her twisted mind could have come up with that…

It’s nice to see the bear sleeping bag making an appearance. Aside from that, it seems that Aoba got lucky, but I think she is too nice to gain an advancement just because of one design. There is no surprise that she wants to work with Kou, not crush her just to get on the top. That is why it worked out in the end.

I am glad that Yun learned a nice life lesson. Saying that one shouldn’t try just because you won’t get it is probably not the best approach. If you don’t try, you don’t get.

I prefer the cow Aoba. Dogs and cats are already overrated.

This was a very interesting episode. I guess it’s Ko’s first time to get that kind of rejection that she felt she was inadequate so she lashed out on Aoba. It’s a good thing that her wifey is there to show her the right path. I guess everything turned out well for both Ko and Aoba. Teamwork really gets you farther. This episode also explained some changes in the animation style. The first episode featured some chibi scenes but I don’t remember seeing that style in Season 1. It screams “kawaii upgrade”. Even for the OP and ED. I guess the creators also wanted the viewers to have an immersive experience through some few delightful tweaks in the style.

Its too hard to decide which Aoba is the best. Let’s just say Aoba looks cute and adorable in anything she wears. It seems Ko relied so heavily on her Fairies designs, since those were the ones the got her the character designer position when she first started, that she lost a bit of the creativity she once had. It must’ve hurt watching something that once gave her so much success be rejected. She was so focused on getting the designs done she forgot to add in her own imagination. I think that’s why pairing her up with Aoba was a good idea. Aoba cared more about making the designs looking creative and unique. Ko can draw the designs while Aoba can come up with the creative characters that Ko can’t. Shame we didn’t get to see Yun’s drawings too though.

Can take a moment to appreciate how great and awesome Aoba is when she torments inanimate objects. I can literally watch a whole episode on that alone. Aoba is such a nerd but that’s why we love her.

I like how everyone’s getting additional layers, this season. Yun was adrift when thinking of her future. Too afraid of failure, she was running in place. Hajime is a good girl at heart, even if she is a slacker.

Once again, we get to see Aoba’s playful side. I get the idea, she’d like to model those outfits for Hifumi (poor Hifumi would probably die. Worth it).

It was great to see Ko, so put out by her failure. She seems, to Aoba, to have it all together. So, to see Ko frustrated, angry, and lashing out gives her more depth. That she realized her mistake, (and with a push from Rin) sought to make amends, makes her that much more lovable.

Kudos to the OP for adding more fuel to the Aoba x Hifumi ship.

Inu Aoba is da best. The other two are nice.

Everyone thinking that Hajime was working hard when she actually wasn’t really put her in a bad position. At least she came clean to Aoba and pals. She’s too honest to keep up an unintentional lie.

Yun learned something valuable that day; don’t give up before even trying. It may not be much but her efforts won’t be in vain!

Ko was shocked that her designs were passed over and Aoba’s accepted. I can see where Hazuki’s coming from though. Ko may be a great designer but she needs to go out of her comfort zone sometimes, seeing as not every game Eagle Jump will create will be a fantasy-themed one.

Urk, Ko lashing out at Aoba was painful but with some helpful advice from Rin, she helped Aoba with the finishing touches of her design and would you know it, they’re co-Leads. It’s great that she didn’t go down the same path her senpai did when she was in Aoba’s position.
