Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid Episode 4: Little Dragon Ready For School

An episode centered around Kanna. My heart wasn’t ready for it…especially with the below image as a sign of what’s to come.

Super Cute Kanna.jpg

We joined ouw cute little dragon watching kids going to school and Miss Kobayashi asked if she wanted to go too. Her incredibly bright smile was all she needed to get her point across.

The three went out shopping for the required supplies with Kanna being as lethally adorable as a nyanko, nearly causing the polar ice caps to melt.

Worried Kanna.jpg

At a store where they had to buy mandatory clothing Tohru asked why Kanna had to dress the same as the other children. Miss Kobayashi explained that Japan has a preference for everyone looking the same. Anyone who was different would be ostracized. Tohru rightfully thought it was dumb as it reminded her of how horribly she was treated by the people of her world for being different, essentially a dragon. Kanna was worried that she too would be villified but Miss Kobayashi assured her she had nothing to worry about.

At school Kanna quickly made a strong impression. Tohru was tasked by Miss Kobayashi to make sure she’s alright. As she saw Kanna’s day at school she questioneed the human world’s educational system and outdoor activities such as dodgeball saying it fit humanity’s barbaric nature.

Riko Saikawa.jpg

Riko Saikawa. The worst tsundere ever.

Kanna’s popularity grabbed the attention of a girl who is quite possibly the WORST tsundere I have ever seen…and I mean this as a compliment. She is TERRIBLE at hiding her true feelings. She didn’t even need to use the traditional “It’s not like you turn me on or anything”. Kanna was a bit shocked because it seemed she might be ostracized so she responded to the shiny tsundere’s advances with her secret weapon.

Lowering Riko’s guard with a faint attack.

Tohru and Kanna walking back home.jpg

While walking back home she explained to Tohru that the reason she wanted to go to school was because she wanted to get closer to humans so she could learn how to best get along with them through good times and bad. Very astute for a child.

Riko turned on by Kanna's compliment.jpg

Like I said. Riko is madly in love with Kanna.

Kanna and Riko facing older guys.jpg

The second half of the episode was about an incident that started when Riko wanted to show her crush a cool playground before they were almost hurt by older boys. The more reasonable of the group tried bargaining with the girls but Riko’s need to impress Kanna got the two in trouble after she goaded the boys to accept her “winner gets the playground” dodgeball challenge. She of course regretted her decision later but the older dragons were amused by the challenge and agreed to help them.

As expected it was a massacre. Thankfully Lucoa knew how to gently help Riko forget what she had seen.

So Miss Kobayashi has a dragon in love with her and Kanna has a human. How delightful.

Kanna finally has a girlfriend of her own. Good for her.

Also, judging by the preview for the next episode, it looks like my favorite scene from the manga will be in the next episode.

With this, Urara Meirocho and Nyanko Days, I’m not sure I’ll be able to survive until the end of the season…
Kanna continues to be the best thing ever, but the other dragons are proving themselves to be great as well – that was some pretty impressive dodgeball.
I’m already liking Riko. She’s a great addition to the cast and a great match for Kanna.

So much lethal cuteness this season. It is both wonderful and dangerous.
Kanna’s cuteness truly is near fatal for people with soft spots.
It was an intense match that’s for sure.
Riko was born to meet and date Kanna that’s for sure.

Saikawa finally gets introduced and I absolutely love how they did her in the anime. The shine on her forehead is insanely cute and a cool little inclusion kyoani decided to add in. Kanna was too adorable for Saikawa to handle. Kobayashi, Tohru, Kanna, and Saikawa remind me of Nanofate, Vivio, and Einhart in which the daughter is similar to the mom (Kanna/Kobayashi and Nanoha/Vivio) while their gf’s are similar (Tohru/Saikawa and Fate/Einhart).

I wonder when Elma will be introduced. I can’t wait for Kobayashi’s second gf to make her grand appearance.

I am new to the Yuri Nation, but man I am lovin’ the latest series to come out lately!
Including this one, alongside Gabriel Dropout
I am a hardcore, longtime anime fan, but I cant seem to get enough of yuri
Old school or current like Dragon Maid, it’s all good
you can almost feel your teeth rotting from the cuteness overload
Cant wait till the other dragons appear, Elna, and Iruru : )

Why yes, Dragon Maid is certainly a great show.
I too look forward to meeting the remaining dragons.

        thanks!!!
I recently mentioned on Random Curiosity that this was a yuri show, and that I was sick and tired of the harem genre, and it was refreshing that a series like this one was taking place
        I got trolled for it : (
but it’s all good, haters going to hate I guess
long live yuri way of life!

This episode was absolutely fantastic, the action scenes in this anime makes me wonder what this show would be like if it WAS an action/fantasy anime. Also, what happened to Nyanko Dropout Jihen? this week’s post is pretty late, did I miss an announcement or something?

  7. This episode was as delightful as I thought it’d be and then some. Kanna is still the sweetest little thing ever and Saikawa is the perfect gf for her.

    An adorable episode indeed!
Since Kanna is now legitimately a daughter-figure to the Kobayashis, her first-day-at-school episode is compulsory.

Riko is also a great addition to the cast. Maybe it’s just me but a girl named Riko always seems to be gay for some reason (which is good for me).
As for Riko being the worst tsundere, my theory is that it might come from her immaturity. She seems to be not used to hide her true feelings, or even conscious of her love, unlike more mature real-tsundere girls.

I have to admit that this episode is just too cute. While Riko is mean to her, I like how Kanna convinced Riko to become her friend. But yes, Riko is not the greatest tsundere out there, probably close to the run of the mill ones.

Kanna is such an adowable wittle electric ball of cuteness! It was also so dang adorable when Tohru tagged Kobayashi with a sticker! Riko is the best worst tsundere ever hands down, and I ship it.

This ep was super cute. As much as I like Tohru I gotta say Kanna totally stole the show this ep, she’s so adorable. Really loving this show, so enjoyable to watch each week.

Didn’t really agree with ‘humans are afraid of differences’ when it comes to humans globally. Some places embrace differences.

Even in places where this is true it’s more nuanced than this: you got different tolerance levels allowing some differences, and the evolution of differences into the new normal.

Was this overgeneralizing done on purpose and are weak-points for some characters? Kobayashi passed this weak-point onto her girlfriend, thus also gaining a skewed perspective on humans too, aye?

Just to make this more clear, where I’m from you wouldn’t get a red-hair girl screaming or indirectly implying in some way ‘don’t stand out so much’ in school. Staying the same gets you nowhere where I’m from. Same in business.

I think Kobayashi just had a bad experience causing her to have a skewed perspective.

  15. So adorable! KyoAni is actually managing to do it better than the manga, at least so far. I’m liking Kanna more and more due to the anime version, tbh. Riko is also adorable/adorably gay for Kanna. Shiny forehead is shiny (and sort of also adorable). I’m starting to wonder if KyoAni might actually be going the whole distance when it comes to this show and Yuri…but I guess we’ll (still) just need to wait and see about that.
