Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku Episode 1: Something Odd This Way Comes

The first episode served more as an introduction for things to come…and said things do not look like they will be adorable.

Koyuki playing a game.jpg

The show is about a popular mobile magical girl themed “Free to Pay” JRPG called Magical Girl Raising Project where it is just that, train a magical girl to be awesome by battling and collecting super cards. The usual stuff.

One day while heading to school with friends they talked about a blog that featured strange sightings of what looked like magical girls rescuing civilians and fighting crime. Koyuki, our leading girl, had a hard time talking about the reports freely (she wanted to say that magical girls always/should fight for truth, justice and cupcakes) with there not being many people who talk about magical girl stuff.

Fellow magical girl fans.jpg

This takes us to the past where Koyuki slowly lost friends who were interested in the genre as she got older but there was one boy who she shared the love of the genre for a while. Then the two went to different and we neeeeever saw Souta again…

Magical Girl Snow White.jpg

Koyuki’s magical girl form, Snow White.

Later that night while Koyuki was playing a quick round of MGRP the game’s mascot, Fav (fahv), spoke directly to Koyuki and offered her the chance to become a magical girl. Didn’t take long for her to accept despite it seeming like a fishy and out of nowhere offer based solely on how devoted she was to the game.

Magical Girl chat lounge.jpg

Fav explained that there were 15 magical girls in town. When she got to talk to several of them at the chat lounge one of them, La Pucelle, offered to be Snow White’s mentor.

La Pucelle sent a private message to meet Snow White in person. They discussed what it means to be a magical girl and what awaits Koyuki from now on. Top Speed (witch) and Ripple (grumpy kunoichi) also stopped by to say hi. La Pucelle then revealed her true identity as Souta. Yayyyy…At least he knows how to create a decently attractive magical girl avatar. Whatever. No big deal. As K in the comments section said he deserves brownie points for his dedication to magical girls after all these years. Respect dood.

The show ended after the credits with a message from Fav that the 15 magical girls would be cut down to 8 soon. How this will happen is anyone’s guess but judging from the first scene when the show started…

Disturbing scene.jpg

Oh dear.

I predict things will go South around the episode 3 mark since that is the lucky/unlucky number for most 12-13 episode anime.

Some people referred to this show as “Madoka meets Danganronpa”. As long as it’s not the moronic “Madoka ripoff” nonsense that’s become a dated complaint long ago then it’s fine.

Actually maybe this will cheer you up about Souta He could be genderfluid sometimes he likes being a male soccer player other times a girly magical girl

  2. x says:

It might be the next episode for it to go dark. I hope it doesn’t get super gory.

  3. K says:

Danganronpa just ended and seeing as the monochrome mascot in that show was evil, I don’t trust Fav. “Thinning the herd” will more than likely be a not so fluffy experience.

La Pucelle being Souta was a tad surprising. At the same time, you gotta admire the dude. His love for the MG genre is that strong. His and Koyuki’s backstories is the story of many a person who has a hobby that nobody wants to talk about.

The fact they mentioned Snow White scored the highest in her first week suggests their score is what determines who makes the cut. If this the case the whole rule about not interfering in other magical girls’ territory is probably going out of the window as they will competing to keep their score as high as possible- leading to them getting into fights over territory and probably going as far as trying to kill each other as most of the characters are likely going to have reasons to why they need to remain magical girls.

On side note, I must admit kind of like Souta (or at least don’t immediately hate him). I see him as a positive representative of male fans of the magical girl genre. Given the dark nature of this show, his resentment with being male (stating guys can only become mages) may be indicative of gender dysphoria, meaning that him being a magical girl is him living as closely to the gender identifies as without risking his health and his relationship with family and friends going to under gender corrective surgery and all the work that requires (hormones and such). If that’s the case, then he would be desperate to maintain his status as a magical girl. Or maybe I’m thinking waaay to much into this.

Either way, he does make a good point at the severe lack of a magical boy genre. The only anime that I know of that can be labeled as “magical boy” is Earth Defense Club, but that doesn’t take itself seriously at all and appears to be more a gender flipped parody of magical girl anime in general designed to appeal to fujoshi. And that’s really a shame as I feel there could be a market for magical boy anime aimed at a shonen demographic with a winks and nudges towards a more female fan base (after all shonen series like InjuYasha and Black Butler are known to have primarily female fandoms with their pretty boy protagonists.)

Isn’t it fun when anime inspires deep, thoughtful thinking?

Most likely the direction they’re going with the show. Should be an interesting yet gloomy watch.

Would be interesting if Souta were somehow introduced as a transgender character. We’ll see if that’s the case or some will cry “missed opportunity”. Definitely makes him worth keeping a close eye on then.

I like that show personally though your proposition for a serious magical boy show is also worth exploring. Maybe a brave soul out there would give it a go and fund such a project.

Once in a while a picking up a show like that can be fruitful.

Oh they have their reasons for being a magical girl alright, one of them being – TO SURVIVE!

While you are wondering, yes, I did read the manga adaptation of this anime and I can say this without spoiling too much, this anime is the magical girl version of Kamen Rider Ryuki, except without monsters or an ultimate wish or a dumb and annoying MC, and a less stupid plot.

I will be watching this anime since the 1st episode already differ from the manga version quite a bit, one being Souta revealed himself way earlier than the manga version, which took like 4 to 5 chapters.

Also, I do agree. Souta deserves all the respect he gets. A boy likes the magical girl genre and ended up becoming one is really one of the greatest thing a magical girl fan can wish to achieve. And he/she has a freaking cool design and an awesome sword at that, plus she is a knight!

If you wish to share your thoughts from now on refrain from referencing the manga version at all times no matter how much you want to.

Yeah I too will be keeping a close eye on Souta and of course he deserves respect for his love of the magical girl genre.

Hmmm I’m not much of a fan of guys turning into girls thing that are part of the main cast but I guess I might keep at it depending on how the story will go…and also for the bloody dark side of it πŸ˜› Though I do like the fact that he’s genuinely into magical girls and not being a perv πŸ™‚

Somehow I don’t trust that black and white rabbit/chicken mascot thing, he/she/it is clearly a child of Monokuma from Danganronpa, Dagger and Kyubey -_-

It’s only the first episode so I’m still neutral about this show I’ll most likely have a side by ep.3 since, like you said, it is the mark of most 12-13 ep shows. The only thing I certainly like in this show is its ED track, Dreamcatcher by Nano ❀ The moment I heard the voice singing I knew it was her :3 I’ve been a fan since her OP of Hidan no Aria AA “Bull’s Eye” πŸ˜› Okay that’s enough of that, I know that was quite irrelevant πŸ˜›

I know the conditioned response to shows like this is to immediately think “Madoka Ripoff”, but honestly, this gave me more of a Mirai Nikki/Gakkou Gurashi vibe considering the cutesy atmosphere clouded by impending the gore of a possible survival game. That being said, I’m quite intrigued by this and definitely want to see where it takes us. Also, like some of the others commenting, I actually like the twist of Sou-chan being one of the MGs because it just may break the stigma of guys not being allowed to like MGs or maybe he will turn out to be genderfluid. It could also be a best of both worlds situation, though I suspect we won’t be seeing as much of him as a guy, which I’m sure most would prefer anyway. So very interesting start indeed. Let’s see how it goes.

That works too. Mirai Nikki or Gakkou Gurashi are more sensible comparisons.
Yup. Fans have convinced me that Souta being one of the MGs is not a bad thing after all. It all depends on what the writers do with La Pucelle.
      Looking forward to more.

Of all the anime premiering this season, this was my most anticipated. I actually waited for OG to post on this so I could make my first ever post be about it. I even held out on posting on Izetta, my second most anticipated, because of this.
But anyway, I enjoyed this first episode immensely, and was very satisfied!
I’m quite happy with everything so far. Especially the character designs.
I could go more in depth with that, as well as talk about what really surprised me (La Pucelle), but I went on too long already. I look forward to no longer lurking here though!

I’m not sure what to think about this…La Pucelle is so gorgeous, but is not a he, is a she so….i have mixed feelings i guess. Fortunately there are a couple of pairings around so i guess i will get over it.
The plot looks interesting, i can smell the drama, action and love in the air.

I have to say, it’s surprising to see a boy become a magical girl (and transforming into an actual girl as well). At least his character looks pretty.

From the looks of it, I have a feeling that the girls will fight against each other or monsters appearing to eliminate half. Either way, it looks dark and might not have a fluffy and cheerful feeling as seen in most magical girl shows. Either way, I am interested.
